For many members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA), the issue of TRS-Care funding is foremost on their minds.<\/p>\n<p>TRTA Executive Director Tim Lee spoke today with Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Terrell) during a Facebook Live event about his proposal to overhaul state funding for TRS-Care. Gooden\u2019s bill (HB 151) would allocate $1 billion from the state\u2019s Economic Stabilization Fund (also known as the Rainy Day Fund) for the program. The funding would dramatically ease the financial pain retirees will experience as a result of changes made to the program during the regular 85<sup>th<\/sup> Sesi\u00f3n Legislativa.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video fb_iframe_widget fb_iframe_widget_fluid_desktop\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasRetiredTeachers\/videos\/1548031418582131\/\" data-show-text=\"false\" data-width=\"500\"><iframe class=\"\" title=\"fb:video Facebook Social Plugin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/v2.10\/plugins\/video.php?app_id=&amp;channel=http%3A%2F%2Fstaticxx.facebook.com%2Fconnect%2Fxd_arbiter%2Fr%2FK6RbmRhg2m2.js%3Fversion%3D42%23cb%3Df35520d4666ece2%26domain%3Dtrta.org%26origin%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Ftrta.org%252Ff1697bef108e958%26relation%3Dparent.parent&amp;container_width=707&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FTexasRetiredTeachers%2Fvideos%2F1548031418582131%2F&amp;locale=en_US&amp;sdk=joey&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=500\" name=\"f1f4d81efdb8f7a\" width=\"500px\" height=\"1000px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Rep. Gooden encouraged retirees to continue communicating with Gov. Greg Abbott about the importance of finding additional funding for TRS-Care. Gooden also recommended that retirees communicate with their Representatives about his bill and encourage all State Representatives to cosign the bill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.votervoice.net\/TRTA\/campaigns\/53672\/respond\">Click here<\/a> to contact your Representative about cosigning HB 151.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, special session only lasts for 30 days. If nothing is done during this timeframe, the new plan design changes for TRS-Care will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018, leaving many retirees with difficult financial burdens.<\/p>\n<p>TRTA has many friends in the Legislature, and there will be several bills filed proposing help for retirees. We will report and analyze each bill as special session progresses.<\/p>\n<p>The TRTA State Legislative Committee also met in Austin today to discuss their plans for special session and beyond.
