{"id":2689,"date":"2016-11-10T09:59:44","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T15:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trta.org\/?p=2689"},"modified":"2016-11-10T09:59:44","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T15:59:44","slug":"welcome-to-foundation-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trta.org\/es\/welcome-to-foundation-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to Foundation Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Foundation Month, designated by the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) Board of Directors as November, is a time to increase awareness of our charitable partner organization\u2019s programs, good deeds, and plans for the future!<\/p>\n<p>Foundation Month is also when the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF) makes its annual call for donations. It is a time to give back to the education community and reflect on the great legacy of public education.<\/p>\n<p>TRTF is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of active and retired educators. TRTF makes its presence known through several charitable initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3oO4NWa0Py4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The most well-known initiative is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trtf.org\/a-helping-hand\/\">the \u201cA Helping Hand\u201d program<\/a>. &#8220;A Helping Hand&#8221; provides public education retirees with charitable assistance for a one-time special need or other short-term hardship. Recipients include anyone who is receiving or is eligible to receive an annuity from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS).<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2010, \u201cA Helping Hand\u201d has provided more than $90,000 in grants for such purposes as medical bills, home repairs, food, and utilities to 94 individuals.<\/p>\n<p>If you or a fellow educator is in financial need, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trtf.org\/a-helping-hand\/apply-for-help\/\">please submit your request here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TRTF also delivers grants to active educators who strive to improve classrooms through various initiatives for Texas students. Last year, TRTF provided fifteen $500 classroom assistance grants for teachers to purchase supplies and create projects for students. Read more about last year\u2019s recipients <a href=\"http:\/\/trtf.org\/scholarships-grants\/2016-2017-trtf-scholarship-and-grant-recipients\/\">aqu\u00ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TRTF has documented many of these efforts in its \u201cMaking a Difference\u201d video series.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LYjj1Oyw5Bs?list=PLJ5kSsAQ_DjQMH36lx3CZn9H1uSdWitl9\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Applications for Classroom Assistance Grants <a href=\"http:\/\/trtf.org\/scholarships-grants\/\">are available here<\/a>. Fifteen grants will be given in March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>This year, TRTF has redeveloped its scholarship program. Beginning Teacher Scholarships provide financial assistance to teachers who are entering the classroom for the very first time. Each scholarship is worth $750, with the purpose of funding certification tests and purchasing classroom supplies. TRTF will deliver ten scholarships in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Applications for the scholarships <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trtf.org\/scholarships-grants\/new-beginning-teacher-scholarships\/\">are available here<\/a>. The deadline to apply for both Classroom Assistance Grants and Beginning Teacher Scholarships is March 16, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, TRTF continues to grow its newly formed endowment fund. The Lehr-Pritchard Endowment Fund commemorates the work of two pivotal figures in Texas public education retirement history, Mike Lehr and Tom Pritchard. The purpose of the endowment fund is to create a permanent source of funding for the \u201cA Helping Hand\u201d program. You can mail in your donation using the pre-paid envelope included with your issue.
