{"id":2816,"date":"2015-10-28T15:17:59","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T20:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trta.org\/?p=2816"},"modified":"2015-10-28T15:17:59","modified_gmt":"2015-10-28T20:17:59","slug":"planting-the-seeds-trtf-classroom-assistance-grants-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trta.org\/es\/planting-the-seeds-trtf-classroom-assistance-grants-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Planting the Seeds: TRTF Classroom Assistance Grants in Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Randy Mayer has spent 15 years teaching; but in his three years with Hays ISD, he\u2019s found an uncommon amount of support for his non-traditional methods.<\/p>\n<p>Mayer teaches students with special needs at an alternative school in Buda, Texas. He is a master gardener who has been craving the opportunity to educate students through the medium of horticulture.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF), his wish is finally starting to come true. TRTF provided Mayer a $500 classroom assistance grant in March. The grant has allowed Mayer to start a botanical greenhouse, wherein he teaches his students with multiple disabilities practical life principles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LYjj1Oyw5Bs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really cool to see the passion in their eyes,\u201d said Mayer, \u201cand the passion would have never even been explored if we didn\u2019t have the greenhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hays ISD matched TRTF\u2019s grant, so Mayer was given $1,000 to build his greenhouse. Mayer used the money to purchase ultra-violet sheeting, shovels, gloves and wheelbarrows. Mayer said he doesn\u2019t want a lot of \u201cbells and whistles.\u201d He is focused on providing an education the students can take home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we will do is keep everything organic and everything simplified, so that these students can take what they\u2019ve learned here and duplicate it in their own backyard,\u201d Mayer said.<\/p>\n<p>Once the plants have come to fruition, Mayer sends them home with his students. Mayer\u2019s program focuses on vegetables such as tomatoes, squash and beans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey see it from a seed package to their own dinner table,\u201d Mayer said. \u201cDelayed gratification happens over four to five months when you\u2019re gardening, and it teaches so many different skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayer already is starting to see results, as one of his senior students was able to complete the program and is on his way to graduating high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t thank the Foundation enough,\u201d said Mayer. \u201cTo see the passion in these kids is all it would take for anybody to donate to your organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/trtf.org\/scholarships-grants\/2015-2016-trtf-scholarship-and-grant-recipients\/\">TRTF delivered 15 $500 classroom assistance grants in 2015<\/a>, and the organization hopes to match that amount next year, too.
