The Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) is moving full steam ahead, and we need your help!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.votervoice.net\/TRTA\/campaigns\/64130\/respond\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.votervoice.net\/TRTA\/campaigns\/64130\/respond\"><strong>Contact your legislator today by clicking here!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Texas Legislature is moving at a rapid pace, finalizing budget discussions, hearing bills in committee, having heated floor session debates, and we need them to be THINKING ABOUT YOU while they are doing the work of Texas!<\/p>\n<p>The march is on to #RAISETHEBASE funding for the pension fund and TRS-Care!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/trta.org\/es\/issues\/trs-defined-benefits\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/trta.org\/issues\/trs-defined-benefits\/\"><strong>The Teacher Retirement System (TRS) of Texas Pension Fund<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Senador <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasRetiredTeachers\/photos\/a.170336489684971\/2257824727602793\/?type=3&amp;theater\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasRetiredTeachers\/photos\/a.170336489684971\/2257824727602793\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Joan Huffman (R \u2013 Houston) filed Senate Bill 12<\/a> that, if passed, would make the pension fund actuarially sound and provide retirees with a 13th check. Per a press release written by Huffman\u2019s office, \u201cby addressing TRS\u2019s solvency problem with a conservative plan, the Legislature can secure the retirement for teachers!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The press release continues \u201cthe proposed bill would increase state, district, and active employees&#8217; pension contributions over a six-year period. The bill would also provide a &#8220;13th check&#8221; to ALL retired school employees, putting more money in retirees&#8217; hands immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the Texas House, Representative Greg Bonnen (R \u2013 Friendswood) has filed <a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=86R&amp;Bill=HB9\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=86R&amp;Bill=HB9\">House Bill 9<\/a>. HB 9 would make the pension fund actuarially sound by raising the state contribution to TRS to 8.8 percent over time as well as provide a one-time payment to retired teachers.
