{"id":60701,"date":"2021-08-28T12:40:36","date_gmt":"2021-08-28T17:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trta.org\/?p=60701"},"modified":"2021-08-28T12:40:36","modified_gmt":"2021-08-28T17:40:36","slug":"senate-bill-7-passes-through-texas-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trta.org\/es\/senate-bill-7-passes-through-texas-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate Bill 7 Passes Through Texas House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senate Bill 7, the bill that would provide a supplemental payment to eligible TRS retirees if passed, was debated on Friday, August 27, on the House floor in the Texas Legislature.<\/p>\n<p>In a moment that seemed to be building all day with anticipation, Texas House members <strong>shouted \u201cAye!\u201d<\/strong> when the vote on SB 7 was called to move the bill into its final stages of being passed.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the video clip below. Glenn Rogers (R \u2013 Graford), and all those in the chamber who demonstrated a strong show of support for TRS retirees!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it means.<\/strong> SB 7 authorizes a supplemental payment to retired educators equal to the lesser of a retiree\u2019s current monthly annuity or $2,400 dollars.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to authorizing the payment, the Legislature is appropriating $701 million in General Revenue, which would be provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=872&amp;Bill=HB5\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=872&amp;Bill=HB5\">House Bill 5<\/a>  by Rep. Greg Bonnen (R \u2013 Friendswood). HB 5 is not on the calendar for debate yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you can do.<\/strong> The Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) supports SB 7 and HB 5. We have worked in both special sessions to help get these bills passed. We are asking our members to stay tuned to TRTA updates as we monitor the progress of HB 5, so that we can ensure funding for SB 7 is obtained.
