He welcomed TRTA members to the legislative session and provided an overview of what to expect.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j1NlvXxxsOw\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j1NlvXxxsOw\">Watch the video here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the video, he provided 10 tips for the legislative session.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Stay Informed<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Sign up for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trta.org\/es\/the-inside-line\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/trta.org\/the-inside-line\/\">the Inside Line<\/a>\u00a0and keep an eye out for our urgent Action Alerts that will prompt you to contact your legislators about urgent matters like committee hearings and bill votes.<\/li>\n<li>Watch Tim Lee\u2019s regular updates about the 88<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Legislative Session on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasRetiredTeachers\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasRetiredTeachers\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0y\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/thetrtatv\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/thetrtatv\">YouTube<\/a>\u00a0live on Thursdays, beginning January 19 at 4 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wrm.capitol.texas.gov\/home\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/wrm.capitol.texas.gov\/home\">Contact your Senator and Representative<\/a>\u00a0and ask them if they\u2019d like to appear with Tim during one of his live broadcasts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"2\"><strong>Build Relationships<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Advocacy is a relationship business!<\/li>\n<li>Be a spokesperson for our issue: TRS Retirees Need a COLA!<\/li>\n<li>Encourage and educate your legislator about why TRS retirees need a COLA and why they need one now.<\/li>\n<li>The truth is the truth: share the facts and share your story of how inflation has impacted you with your legislator.<\/li>\n<li>Think of yourself as a valuable resource who can provide the necessary insight legislators need to better understand why this issue is so important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"3\"><strong>Stay Connected<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/trta.org\/es\/join\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.trta.org\/join\">\u00danase a TRTA<\/a>\u00a0if you have not done so already or ask a friend or former colleague to join!<\/li>\n<li>Consider joining a TRTA local chapter and getting involved at the grassroots level and back home in your legislative district.<\/li>\n<li>Follow TRTA on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasRetiredTeachers\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasRetiredTeachers\">Facebook<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TRTA\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TRTA\">Gorjeo<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/thetrtatv\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/thetrtatv\">YouTube<\/a>\u00a0y\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trta.org\/es\/trta-app\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/trta.org\/trta-app\/\">download our app<\/a>\u00a0to stay up to date on all the latest legislative happenings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"4\"><strong>Follow Up<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow-up is crucial!<\/li>\n<li>If you meet with your legislator or their staff, be sure to remain in touch with them throughout the session and during the interim.<\/li>\n<li>Check in once a month or more. Make a phone call, write a letter, or send an email!<\/li>\n<li>Maintain that relationship and help them remember you, and to remember you fondly!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"5\"><strong>Say \u201cThank You\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It may be controversial to say, but it is important to be polite and respectful when communicating with legislators and their staff.<\/li>\n<li>There are 181 legislators and thousands of staff members, many of whom are recent college graduates, students, or interns, and some who have spent their entire careers in public service.<\/li>\n<li>Every day, they hear from upset constituents who may express their concerns using anger.<\/li>\n<li>Be forthright, not disrespectful, and say \u201cthank you\u201d when a legislator or their staff member has taken the time to listen to your issue.<\/li>\n<li>You will be contacting them again, and you want them to remember you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"6\"><strong>Be Strong<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>This will be a long, tough session.<\/li>\n<li>Things will change often, and legislation can be very fluid, and at times, very frustrating.<\/li>\n<li>We won\u2019t always feel like progress is being made!<\/li>\n<li>Take a break if you need one and come back to fight another day!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"7\"><strong>Believe<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Believe we can make a difference collectively: you as a member, your fellow retirees, the TRTA Capitol lobbying team and staff, and every TRTA volunteer at the local, district, and state level.<\/li>\n<li>We understand that believing may not be easy sometimes.<\/li>\n<li>Believe you are not alone on this journey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"8\"><strong>Be Honest<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s okay to not know the answer to a question asked by your legislator or one of their staff members.<\/li>\n<li>If you need assistance in providing information to them, please let us know what they need, and we will have someone on the Capitol Team provide a response.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"9\"><strong>Stay on Message<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>TRS retirees need a raise!<\/li>\n<li>Now is the time for the Legislature to act.<\/li>\n<li>Inflation is the highest it\u2019s been in forty years, and TRS retirees living on modest, fixed incomes need help now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"10\"><strong>Show Up Every Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Show up every day, knowing all of us as a team are making a difference.<\/li>\n<li>Show up by believing.<\/li>\n<li>Show up by reading and sharing information.<\/li>\n<li>Show up by calling, emailing, or sending a letter to your legislator, or meeting with them back home in the district or via Zoom.<\/li>\n<li>Show up for TRTA Day at the Capitol on April 12.<\/li>\n<li>Show up and support this crucial cause of helping TRS retirees in any way you can!<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tim Lee, the Texas Retired Teachers Association\u2019s (TRTA) Executive Director, hosted a live video event on Facebook and YouTube yesterday.
