As the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) has reported<\/a>, the constitutional amendments passed on November 7, including Prop 9, are at risk of being delayed due to frivolous legal challenges related to voting machines.<\/p>\n

Action Item<\/strong>–TRTA members, please send an email to Governor Abbott asking him to add this issue to the Call for the current special legislative session. Click here to email Governor Abbott<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Under existing law, it is likely to take at least a year to resolve these suits. Until then, the amendments cannot be implemented.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the Texas Senate passed SB 6. A bill that would \u201cReform the Process Governing Election Challenges to Constitutional Amendments.\u201d While this bill would not make this current situation go away, it would EXPEDITE the process to resolve the challenges to these amendments\u2019 implementation.<\/p>\n

In fact, TRTA believes these challenges would be resolved by March of 2024 instead of January of 2025 if SB 6 is finally passed and becomes law!<\/p>\n

TRTA\u2019s Executive Director, Tim Lee, will host a special live event about this issue on Monday, December 4, at 4 p.m. Central on YouTube <\/a>y Facebook<\/a>. He will be joined by Attorney Andrew Weber.<\/p>\n

Time is short! The current special legislative session ends on December 7. The sooner the legislature reforms the process governing election challenges to constitutional amendments the faster the courts can act on these frivolous claims and retirees will be able to see their COLA implemented.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
