H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/garret-graves\/G000577\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/garret-graves\/G000577\">Rep. Garret Graves<\/a>\u00a0(R, LA) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/abigail-spanberger\/S001209\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/abigail-spanberger\/S001209\">Abigail Spanberger<\/a>\u00a0(D, VA), proposes to repeal the unfair Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).<\/p>\n<p>The Texas Retired Teachers Association\u2019s (TRTA) Executive Director Tim Lee discussed the next steps for this very important bill tonight in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JUIZNcptRK8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JUIZNcptRK8\">a live event <\/a>with President Ella Gauthier and Legislative Coordinator Mary Widmier.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"reproductor de videos de youtube\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JUIZNcptRK8?si=n9CYBWfYSZm_po39\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The WEP is a law that prevents retired Texas educators that participate in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) from drawing their entire Social Security benefit.\u00a0The\u00a0GPO is like the WEP, but instead of reducing the worker\u2019s benefits, the GPO reduces the benefits for a spouse or former spouse who claims\u00a0spousal benefits\u00a0based on a spouse\u2019s or former spouse\u2019s\u00a0earnings record.<\/p>\n<p>The ball is now in the Senate&#8217;s court to advance the bill. TRTA members will be contacting the U.S. Senate about this issue in the coming days.
