In collaboration with the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA), TRTA participated in a rededication of the <em>Tribute to Texas Children<\/em> monument that sits on the north lawn of the Texas Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>During the 73rd Legislative Session in 1993, Senator Bill Ratliff directed the State Preservation Board to construct a permanent exhibit, one that gives ode to Texas children. The life-size bronze sculptures were originally planted in 1998. The monument was designed by globally acclaimed sculptor Lawrence Ludtke, and it portrays six children on a field trip to the Texas Capitol. For this project, thousands of students from over six hundred schools across the state raised $190,000 over the course of five years.<\/p>\n<p>The various monuments that sit on the grounds of the state capitol rely upon charitable donations for their upkeep. TEPSA provided $45,000 to the State Preservation Board in 2023 to kick off the restoration effort for <em>Tribute to Texas Children<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>On April 24, 2025, a rededication ceremony was held to unveil the restored monument, celebrate its legacy, and reaffirm Texas\u2019 pledge to safeguard the welfare and future of its children. Expressing infinite gratitude to the contributors and supporters, TEPSA\u2019s Executive Director, Harley Eckhart said, \u201cWe take pride in being a vital part of the <em>Tribute to Texas Children<\/em>, and we are delighted that the statues have returned, stronger than ever, to greet schoolchildren at the Capitol, and remind lawmakers that serving children should be their top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Historically, TEPSA formally recognizes leaders each year throughout Texas, particularly those who exemplify excellence in service to education. This year, earning acknowledgement for his leadership, involvement, and sustained commitment to supporting public school retirees, TRTA\u2019s Executive Director, Tim Lee was chosen as the honorary <em>Tribute to Texas Children<\/em> Award recipient for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have worked with TEPSA for many years, and I know and appreciate all they do. It is a tremendous organization with a track record all about helping Texas students and those professionals who serve our Texas public schools,\u201d Lee said. &#8220;Being a recipient of their highest award is an honor, and knowing they call TRTA and me their friend is especially gratifying.
