What began as a small ceremony honoring a handful of local veterans has grown into a cherished community tradition that fills an auditorium with appreciative citizens, lines city streets with hundreds of American flags, and teaches generations of students the value of service, sacrifice, and citizenship.

As a high school art teacher, Short understands the power of helping students see the world through a different lens. Through Huntington’s Veterans Day Celebration and annual flag display, she has created opportunities for young people to connect with history, honor those who served, and gain a deeper appreciation for the freedoms they enjoy every day.

The roots of that commitment stretch back to her childhood.

“My father, George Simpson, was a Marine Raider and Purple Heart recipient during World War II,” Short said. “He taught me citizenship, leadership, and patriotism. I grew up in a home where loyalty to our country was deeply valued, and the American flag was always proudly displayed.”

Those lessons stayed with her.

So, when then-principal and Air Force veteran Mike Terry asked her in 1995 to organize a small Veterans Day program, her response was immediate.

“I replied, ‘I’m on it!'”

That first ceremony was simple, attended by only about a dozen veterans. Yet something special happened that day.

“A spark was ignited, a need was met, and our community embraced the opportunity to honor those who had served,” Short recalled.

And over the years, that spark has grown into one of Huntington’s most treasured traditions. The annual Veterans Day Celebration welcomes approximately 120 veterans from Huntington and surrounding communities. Students, families, elected officials, and community members gather in a packed 1,200-seat auditorium to recognize the men and women whose service and sacrifice have helped safeguard our nation.

“There is no admission charge, no vendors, and nothing commercial about the event,” Short said. “It is simply an expression of gratitude for those who have honorably served and sacrificed for our freedom.”

While the ceremony pays tribute to those who’ve served, Short believes its significance extends further.

“To me, the ceremony serves two important purposes,” she said. “First, it honors our beloved veterans. Second, it instills in our students a sense of pride, respect, and thankfulness for the men and women who have defended our nation and protected the freedoms we enjoy every day.”

One unforgettable moment came when two World War II veterans attended the ceremony and discovered they had served together during the Battle of Iwo Jima. What began as a chance conversation revealed a shared history, culminating in an emotional embrace.

“It was a moment none of us who witnessed it will ever forget,” Short said.

The impact of her work extends well beyond a single day each November.

For two weeks each year, more than 700 American flags line the streets of Huntington in tribute to veterans. Each flag bears a personalized brass plate honoring a veteran’s service. The massive display is made possible by a select group of high school seniors who volunteer to help place the flags throughout town.

Students learn proper flag etiquette, safety procedures, and the stories behind many of the names they carry.

As they work, they also witness the gratitude of an entire community. Passing motorists honk their horns in appreciation. Local businesses provide refreshments. Community members stop to ask questions and share stories.

One interaction, in particular, has stayed with Short.

“I handed a student a flag and said, ‘This one belongs to Mr. Nerren. He was a World War II prisoner of war and survived the Bataan Death March,'” she recalled. “The student paused and replied, ‘Oh, wow. Thank you.'”

For Short, that brief exchange captured the true purpose of the project.

“Moments like that remind me that some of our most meaningful teaching doesn’t happen inside a classroom.”

Perhaps the most powerful testament to the program’s impact came from a Vietnam veteran who attended a recent ceremony. In a note afterward, he shared words that continue to inspire everyone involved.

“I truly appreciate the program,” he wrote. “The most wonderful part is that I don’t feel that I have to hide my service any longer. I can finally be proud of it, and your program has enabled me to feel that way.”

Those words, Short says, are a reminder of why the work matters.

Over the years, her efforts have earned recognition from local leaders, state officials, and the Huntington community. In 2024, Mayor Robert Ricks proclaimed May 29 as J’Nelle Short Day in honor of her contributions.

Yet despite the accolades, Short remains focused on the lesson she hopes educators everywhere will embrace.

“It only takes one person with an idea to lay the foundation for something meaningful,” she said.

Inspired by a patriotic flag display she once saw in Dahlonega, Georgia, Short brought the idea home to Huntington. One flag at a time, it grew into something far greater than she imagined.

Today, alongside a countywide Veterans Day parade and other commemorative events, local officials proudly recognize Huntington as the “Most Patriotic Town in Texas.”

For fellow educators, Short offers simple but powerful advice: don’t wait to act on an idea that could make a difference.

“Great programs often begin with one person who sees a need and is willing to make a difference,” she said. “Your efforts can inspire students, unite your community, and create a legacy that lasts for generations.”

J’Nelle Short’s legacy is already doing exactly that.

Through thousands of flags, countless student volunteers, and three decades of honoring those who served, she has shown that the greatest lessons are often the ones that extend far beyond the classroom walls. In doing so, she has inspired generations of students to appreciate service, embrace citizenship, and understand the true meaning of gratitude.

That is what makes her a Chalkboard Champion.

Thirty years ago, J’Nelle Short began helping transform Veterans Day in Huntington, Texas, into something far more than a school event.
