While their perspectives were unique, several common themes emerged: opportunity, democracy, freedom, and hope for the future.

The Great Equalizer

Many members described public education as the cornerstone of opportunity in America.

“Public education is the great equalizer,” wrote Cheryl Glasser. “It ensures that every child, no matter his or her race, background, religion, or economic status, receives a free education.”

Others echoed that sentiment, noting that public schools open doors for students from every walk of life. Jane Haley called public education “an integral part of our democracy” that gives all students “a chance to be part of the American dream,” while Pat Worrell described it as providing opportunities for all “regardless of race or economic background.”

For generations of Americans, public schools have served as the pathway to careers, civic engagement, and a better future.

Preserving Democracy Through Education

When asked about the role public education plays in preserving democracy, many retirees pointed to the importance of teaching civic responsibility, critical thinking, and an understanding of American history.

“Public education teaches students about government, laws, voting rights and helps them become informed citizens, which strengthens our democracy,” wrote Evangeline Jordan.

Bettye Cook noted that public schools do far more than teach academic subjects. They help students develop literacy, personal skills, character, and an understanding of people from different backgrounds.

Several members emphasized that democracy depends on an educated citizenry. As Cheryl Glasser observed, America needs citizens who are literate and possess critical-thinking skills so they can fully participate in civic life.

Building the Future

TRTA members were nearly unanimous in their belief that strong public schools remain essential for future generations.

“Strong public schools are the cornerstone of our democracy,” Haley wrote, explaining that they help students think independently, develop tolerance, and better understand those who may be different from themselves.

Molly McClure reflected on a career that spanned from school integration efforts in Houston to instructional coaching decades later. Through those experiences, she witnessed firsthand how strong public schools can change the trajectory of children’s lives by creating opportunities they might not otherwise have.

Others focused on the practical impact of education. Carol Rose described public schools as the “building blocks to future generations,” while Janet Jennings wrote that every child deserves the opportunity to learn to their fullest potential and pursue their dreams.

Together, these responses highlighted a shared belief: investing in public education is an investment in America’s future workforce, leaders, and citizens.

What Public Education Represents

Perhaps the most heartfelt responses came when members were asked what public education represents to them personally.

For many, it represented freedom.

“It represents freedom,” wrote Janice Whiting. “Education is essential to freedom.”

For others, it represented hope and opportunity. Mark Grose summarized it simply: “As a retired teacher, public education represents opportunity for ALL.”

Dr. Shirley Benton, reflecting on her own life journey, wrote that public education represents “freedom, justice, equality, ownership, and having the opportunity to achieve.”

Many respondents also viewed public education as a unifying force. Haley described it as helping “unite us as a country,” while Patricia Holubec emphasized that public educators are committed to serving “everyman” in society, regardless of background or circumstance.

Looking Ahead

As the nation approaches its semi quincentennial celebration, TRTA members see public education as more than a system of schools. They see it as one of America’s greatest achievements.

From one-room schoolhouses to modern classrooms, public education has helped prepare generations of Americans to participate in democracy, contribute to their communities, and pursue their dreams.

As the United States of America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) asked its members to reflect on the role public education played in shaping our nation.
