For 75 years, the Houston Association of Retired Teachers (HART) has given retired educators a place to remain connected to one another, the profession they love, and the communities they continue to serve.<\/p>\n
As HART celebrates its Diamond Anniversary in 2026, its members are reflecting on the relationships, knowledge, and commitment that have carried the organization forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe exist because we know that there is power in knowledge and in numbers,\u201d HART President Rosa Espinosa wrote.<\/p>\n
Retirement has never meant stepping away from the relationships and shared purpose that come with a life in education. Those connections have helped shape HART\u2019s identity and kept generations of retired educators engaged.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor 75 years, HART has exemplified great collegiality throughout its ranks,\u201d Espinosa said. \u201cThere are friendships that have continued from the time they developed at work and now flow into retirement but also are quick to include others who have been in the classroom in various positions and in other places.\u201d<\/p>\n
They are the educators who mentored students, stayed late to tutor, traveled for extracurriculars, arrived early for parent conferences, decorated classrooms, and sponsored student clubs.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, we know who we are,\u201d Espinosa said. \u201cWe are so proud to be educators. To be an educator is a very serious business; we work with children\u2019s minds.\u201d<\/p>\n
That dedication continues well beyond the classroom. In retirement, HART members draw on the leadership and knowledge gained throughout their careers, sharing their wisdom with fellow retirees and staying connected to the world around them.<\/p>\n
This mission is reflected in \u201cThe Teachers\u2019 Legacy: Democracy\u2019s Mentors,\u201d a program HART is presenting this year. Its first installment, \u201cVoting Is Not a Spectator Sport,\u201d debuted as an interactive presentation at HART’s first meeting of the year.<\/p>\n
\u201cKnowledge is power,\u201d Espinosa said.<\/p>\n
HART\u2019s heart for service reaches deep into the local community. Driven by a shared desire to help others, members provide books to children, partner with Kids’ Meals to feed hungry youth, gather food for neighbors experiencing homelessness, and participate in recycling initiatives that support those in need.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn continuing to serve children we hope to serve the future,\u201d Espinosa said.<\/p>\n
This philosophy directly connects HART’s past with its present. Founded in 1951, HART’s first president was Eula Ware. HART was one of six early Texas Chapters that built the foundation for a statewide organization of retired educators. Those pioneering Chapters formed in El Paso (1945), Dallas (1949), Fort Worth (1950), Houston (1951), and San Antonio and Austin (1952).<\/p>\n
Ware would go on to play an even larger role in that history. Following the 1953 National Retired Teachers Association convention in Miami Beach, Ware became the first President of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA). In November of that year, 63 teachers gathered in Dallas to organize the statewide association, followed by TRTA’s first convention in Fort Worth in 1954.<\/p>\n
Today’s HART Officers recognize the significance of those beginnings.<\/p>\n
\u201cEula Ware was HART\u2019s first President and was a great leader, along with the leaders of the other five Chapters that were able to create TRTA,\u201d Espinosa said. \u201cWithout them we would not be here.\u201d<\/p>\n
This history is more than a point of pride; it is a reminder of the strength educators have when they work together. Seventy-five years after HART’s founding, that same commitment shapes the organization. HART members are still learning, still leading, still serving, and still building friendships. And they are still thinking about what comes next.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully, in the next 75 years HART will continue to serve the community and provide retirees with the positivity and collegiality that the members of this organization deserve,\u201d Espinosa said.<\/p>\n
For Espinosa, that future is measured against the example set by HART’s first leader.<\/p>\n
\u201cEula helped make changes,\u201d she said. \u201cI can only hope to make a scintilla of the impact she made for retired educators.\u201d<\/p>\n
What began with a small group of retired educators and $2 dues has grown into a 75-year legacy built by people who never stopped giving back.<\/p>\n
They taught. They mentored. They served.<\/p>\n
And in retirement, they continue to enrich their communities, together.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
