That record has established our association as a leading voice for members of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and a dependable resource for lawmakers on pension protection and retiree health care.<\/p>\n<p>Texas has just experienced one of the most historic elections in decades. The changes brought about by the November 3 election will have a significant impact on governance and public policy. As the next legislative session quickly approaches, TRTA members are wondering what the election means for their TRS pension benefits and retirement security.<\/p>\n<p>Our answer begins with a clear commitment: TRTA\u2019s mission and legislative priorities are to protect and improve the pension benefits on which current TRS retirees depend and strengthen the retirement system that active school employees are counting on.<\/p>\n<p>Our path to success in the legislative session begins with engaging our elected officials, both returning and newly elected. Many of these officials may not yet be familiar with the needs of TRS retirees.<\/p>\n<p>The TRS pension trust fund is a Texas success story. It is well-managed and valuable to all Texans, and we are optimistic about working with legislators to support TRS members.<\/p>\n<p>Our priorities reflect our responsibility to those who devoted their careers to public education. We want to share these needs with policymakers, legislative staff, fellow TRS retirees, and active school employees.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"null\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">TRTA\u2019s Top Priorities in Focus<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Protect the defined benefit pension<\/strong> that current retirees rely on and active employees are working toward. This is a fundamental, unwavering commitment on which TRTA was founded.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ensure TRS is properly funded.<\/strong> TRTA calls on the Legislature to restore TRS to actuarial soundness by ensuring its obligations are properly funded, including those associated with the recent teacher pay increases passed by the 89th Legislature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pass effective cost-of-living increases for all retirees.<\/strong> TRTA supports lasting inflation protection that is responsibly funded so retiree incomes can recover from the devastating effects of inflation. Protecting retiree benefits against inflation should be a shared goal of every TRS member and public policymaker.TRTA recently commissioned a study by The Perryman Group. The study found that annuity payments overall are 26.8 percent below where they would be if they had kept pace with inflation, with gaps of 50 percent or more for some groups of long-retired members. Those gaps are felt in grocery bills, utility costs, health insurance premiums, and other everyday expenses.Providing meaningful inflation relief and pursuing long-term cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) will require hard work, deep commitment, and a plan that helps current retirees without jeopardizing future retirement benefits for active TRS members. TRTA is committed to pursuing every opportunity to address this financial hardship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Protect and strengthen TRS-Care<\/strong> so health coverage remains affordable, effective, and dependable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Protect rightfully earned Social Security and Medicare benefits for TRS retirees and their dependents.<\/strong> TRTA is developing a federal legislative plan called \u201cTRTA Texas Ready.\u201d This initiative focuses on the ever-changing landscape of Social Security and Medicare funding, potential program changes, and the future of these vital programs.While the repeal of WEP and GPO was a major victory, the fight for Social Security fairness is not over. The impending funding shortfalls facing Social Security and Medicare make it essential that we are prepared for proposals that could affect these hard-won gains and TRS-Care. We must be \u201cTRTA Texas Ready\u201d on these extremely important federal policy issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">These priorities and our collective hard work serve TRS members and Texans of every political affiliation. The election brings new relationships to build and new opportunities to educate decision-makers. We will meet those opportunities with preparation, persistence, and respect.<\/p>\n<p>Our members have spent their careers serving Texas. They deserve confidence that their pension system will endure, their health care will remain within reach, and their years of service will continue to be respected.<\/p>\n<p>Our members have always been our greatest strength and the driving force behind our work with elected officials.
