To be considered aging ready, a home needs to have a step-free entry, a first floor bedroom and bathroom with accessibility features. In addition, the following home modifications can make living at home safer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install grab bars<\/li>\n<li>Remove area rugs<\/li>\n<li>Replace handles, as needed.<\/li>\n<li>Install a ramp at entrances if, necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure appropriate lighting.<\/li>\n<li>Use a raised toilet seat.<\/li>\n<li>Use a waterproof seat in the bath and shower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>BE AWARE OF POTENTIAL HAZARDS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most common accidents that seniors experience are falls, burns, and fires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TO LOWER FALL RISKS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider to wearing a medical alert bracelet. (This may be provided by your health insurance provider at no cost).<\/li>\n<li>Wear non-slip shoes that fit properly.<\/li>\n<li>Use a cane or walker if needed. Refrain from holding onto furniture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TO PREVENT BURNS AND FIRES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Replace appliances with frayed electrical cords.<\/li>\n<li>Install smoke detectors. Check batteries twice a year.<\/li>\n<li>Set your water heater no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent scalding.<\/li>\n<li>Call 911 in the event of a fire but, have a fire extinguisher handy.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid wearing loose sleeves and clothing while cooking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TO AVOID POISONING<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep medications in original packaging to avoid confusion or mix-ups. Always take medications as prescribed.<\/li>\n<li>Install carbon monoxide detectors. Check batteries twice a year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>KNOW YOUR EMERGENCY NUMBERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Know the number of your emergency contacts. I would be good to write these numbers on an \u201cemergency contact\u201d sheet and place it in a strategic place, as well as having them on your smart phone.
