Help TRTA Create a WEP Push!

  • On Monday, December 5, the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) and the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) hosted a live event on YouTube and Facebook discussing the WEP reform push!
  • Missed it? Watch the recording here!

TRTA, along with ATPE and the Mass Retirees Association, is calling for action on the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP)! Time is running out. Congressman Richard Neal (D – Mass), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, needs to act before the current legislative term ends!

We need your help today!

Please continue making phone calls and sending emails this week. We need to use our momentum to its fullest and push for a solution now!

We have an opportunity to create change in the WEP, but the opportunity is being squandered by congressional inaction. We need to refocus them on our important issue!

Today, we’re focused on contacting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D – CA). Tomorrow, we’ll focus on contacting leader Kevin McCarthy (R – CA). Later this week, we’ll focus on contacting all Texas congressional members.

Equal Treatment for Public Workers Possible this Congress

The U.S. House Ways and Means Committee met on September 20, 2022 to discuss markup H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2021. A motion to move H.R. 82 out of committee without recommendation to the U.S. House of Representatives passed, essentially killing the bill.

Although the H.R. 82 committee mark-up reiterated that full repeal still lacks the congressional leadership support to move to the floor, it also showcased broad support for a fix, with many committee members calling for quick passage of a bipartisan alternative.

Those calls did not go unnoticed! For years, Neal and Brady have worked on a bipartisan solution called the Equal Treatment of Public Workers Act. Stakeholders and congressional members alike have been waiting for Brady and Neal to announce their bipartisan WEP deal. Now is the time for both leaders to agree so that public workers and retirees can be treated fairly.

Both Brady and Neal have pledged in press statements and at the September committee mark-up to continue negotiating a bipartisan WEP reform agreement that could be included in a year-end tax extender or omnibus spending package.

As the 2022 clock ticks down, the window to pass a bill closes. Brady, a tireless advocate for fixing the WEP since 2004, is retiring, and the House majority will flip to Republican control in January. Neal, also an advocate for a fair and equitable solution to the WEP, will no longer chair the Ways and Means Committee and stakeholders simply do not want to see this moment of cooperative work and focus on such an important issue squandered.

TRTA is calling on its members and friends to help demand action from the House Ways and Means Committee. Brady and Neal have said that a bipartisan solution is doable. However, since the September meeting, they haven’t brought forth a proposal. We need action for the retirees who are being unfairly punished by the arbitrary WEP formula!

Please join our efforts to maintain momentum on reforming the harmful WEP and make this issue a top priority for Congress now!

Give a Gift from the Heart by Donating to TRTF Today!

Thank you, members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) for joining us during Foundation Month in November, a time to honor the charitable work done by our partner organization, the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF).

Since sending out Inside Line articles about “A Helping Hand” and the Disaster Relief Fund, TRTF has received numerous applications for assistance.

We know now is a time of great need for our members. Your generosity has helped TRTF raise $30,000 of our $100,000 goal.

We are asking those of you who are able to please consider making a small donation to TRTF to help us continue our important work and get as close to our goal as possible.

Can you please donate $5 or $10 today? Or do you know someone in your community who could donate to these important causes?

Many retirees are asking for help with very basic needs, such as paying for utility bills and groceries, medical care and prescriptions…things they cannot live without!

Inflation is hurting retirees all across the state. The more pain retirees experience, the more they need and request help from TRTF, and we want to be able to respond with financial assistance to help them  through a difficult time.

TRTF’s programs can make a huge difference in a retiree’s life, and even the smallest donation, when added with small donations from others, really adds up.

TRTF is mission driven, and to accomplish our goals, we are asking for your help so we can help others.

Please help us continue our worthy and vital programs by making a donation today as a gift to honor a family member, friend, or loved one. After you have made a donation, either online or by mail, you may print and mail this lovely holiday card to the person you have honored, spreading both holiday cheer and the joy of helping Texas educators! What a wonderful way to celebrate the season and a person you care for deeply.

Your donation can support one or all of the following charitable programs:

  • “A Helping Hand”
    • assists public education retirees with emergency financial assistance for a short-term hardship, such as home or auto repairs, medical or dental bills, utility bills, groceries, and much more
  • Disaster Relief Fund
    • assists public education employees and retirees who require emergency financial assistance for a short-term hardship due to an unforeseen and widespread disaster
  • Beginning Teacher Scholarships
    • offers funds to first-year teachers to support the cost of certification tests and test results, as well as for purchasing resources for their first classroom
  • Classroom Assistance Grants
    • impacts not only the lives of the educators, but the many students that they influence every day, by supporting the cost of classroom projects
  • Lehr-Pritchard Endowment Fund
    • Funds donated to the Lehr-Pritchard Endowment will be invested and earnings will be used to fund the “A Helping Hand” program.
