State Budget Cuts Hit TRS

TRS told to trim $26.5 million from budget

Governor Perry, Lt. Governor Dewhurst and Speaker Straus have told the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) it must reduce its current budget appropriation by 5%, or $26.5 million. This budget cutting process is part of a statewide, all-agency attempt to reduce Texas state expenditures for the current biennium.

President Seeks Greater GPO/WEP Enforcement

As TRTA prepares for the first-ever national GPO/WEP summit, news came last week that President Obama is seeking greater enforcement of the current GPO/WEP laws in order to help pay for the Social Security program.

More than 600 TRTA members attended a rally at the Texas Capitol on April 22, 2009. In addition to those who were in Austin, more than 1,100 emails were sent to legislators today by TRTA members that were unable to attend.

The entire event was a great success.

Core Belief: Public education employees have been assured of a traditional defined benefit plan as a part of the Constitution of 1937. A traditional defined benefit retirement plan provides public employees a guaranteed pension that will last their entire lives. A privatized plan does not guarantee these public servants the retirement they need and deserve.
