TRTF Helps Retirees Who Need “A Helping Hand”

Thank you, members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA), for celebrating Foundation Month with us! This special time honors the charitable work of our partner organization, the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF).

Today, we’re highlighting two of TRTF’s most vital programs: “A Helping Hand” and Disaster Relief, both designed to support public education retirees facing unexpected challenges.

“A Helping Hand”

Launched in 2010, “A Helping Hand” provides retired public-school employees with one-time assistance for a special need or short-term hardship. Eligible applicants include anyone receiving an annuity from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS). Membership in TRTA is not required to apply.

Since its inception, “A Helping Hand” has awarded more than $315,000 in aid. This year alone, grants have helped cover medical and dental bills, energy bills, tree removal, car repairs, and home repairs.

Disaster Relief

TRTF’s Disaster Relief program provides emergency assistance to public education retirees affected by disasters. Like “A Helping Hand,” TRS eligibility is required, but TRTA membership is not.

Since the fund was created in 2017, it has provided more than $475,000 to cover needs such as home repairs after flooding, roof repairs from hail damage, and property cleanup following wildfires.
