AARSP, organized in 1972, has about 200 members made up of teachers, principals, custodians, cafeteria workers, paraprofessionals,secretaries, and counselors. District 13 includes the 14 local units around Austin, including Austin ISD. Being close to Austin and the Texas State Capitol, District 13 officers and local members are closely involved in efforts to encourage legislation favorable to retired Texas teachers. Any retired public school employee (not just teachers, but all the bus drivers and cafeteria workers and more) are encouraged to join TRTA and a local unit. Our unit incudes retirees from three counties: Menard, Kimble, and Mason. We currently have 131 members. We have five meetings each year in September, November, January, March, and May. We have an active email exchange of information. History In September 1991, the San Patricio County Retired School Personnel organization was founded. Retired district personnel from Gregory-Portland, Mathis, Odem, Sinton, and Taft were members. Later Aransas Pass and Ingleside retirees were added and the name became San Patricio County Retired Teachers Association. Fred Rotzler was the first president. Perla Guerrero is our current president. Margaret Simpson and later Dorothy Rotzler were active in starting the collection of "Teddy Bears" for use by police of the county in dealing with traumatized children. It is a continuing practice. As a service organization, each year we offer a scholarship to a deserving student majoring in education.
