Education has a remarkable way of coming full circle. The encouragement one teacher offers today may become tomorrow’s mentor, community leader, or educator who inspires someone else. For the members of the Brownsville Area Retired School Employees – BARSEA, that ripple effect continues as they serve students and create opportunities long after retirement.
“Retired educators remain an invaluable part of the educational system,” said Josie Campos Villarreal, BARSEA’s president.
Through scholarships, mentorship, advocacy, and community partnerships, BARSEA members carry forward the same purpose that guided their careers: helping students recognize their potential and opening doors for future generations. Drawing on decades of experience in Texas public schools, chapter members remain dedicated to investing in students across Brownsville, Los Fresnos, and Port Isabel while demonstrating that education is a lifelong mission.
“Every student deserves encouragement, opportunity, and someone who believes in their potential,” Josie said. “Our greatest contribution may not be measured by the years we spent as educators, but by the lives we continue to influence.”
That ongoing work recently received statewide recognition when the Trellis Foundation awarded BARSEA a $20,000 grant to support student scholarships for the 2025–2026 school year.
Josie is quick to credit the chapter’s Executive Board, Scholarship Chair Alma Garcia, Scholarship Committee, and members whose collective efforts made the achievement possible. She emphasizes that BARSEA’s greatest accomplishments come from members united by a shared devotion to serving others.
“This outstanding outcome is the result of hard work, teamwork, dedication, leadership, and passion,” she said. “Together, we’ve created meaningful opportunities for students to pursue their educational goals.”
Among the scholarship recipients was a student whose dream of becoming an ESL/bilingual teacher grew from overcoming personal adversity with the support of a devoted single mother and educators who believed in their potential. Seeing that student move one step closer to achieving that dream reminded BARSEA members why their work matters.
“We are honored to invest in students whose future service will strengthen our schools, uplift families, and inspire the next generation of learners,” Josie said.
For Josie, her role as chapter president has reinforced a lesson she hopes all retired educators embrace: the greatest impact comes when retired educators combine their leadership, enthusiasm, and shared vision to serve others.
“Our greatest strength has never been what we accomplished alone, but what we achieve together as a team,” she said. “When retired educators unite around a common purpose, we create opportunities that change lives and leave a legacy that will enrich future generations.”
BARSEA’s investment in students reflects the enduring power of an educator’s calling. The lessons, encouragement, and belief in students that guided their careers live on through the opportunities they create today. Like the ripple effect set in motion by a single act of encouragement, their support has the power to inspire future educators, leaders, and community servants who will carry that legacy forward.
Their work is also a reflection of the leadership that defines TRTA members across Texas. Through service, advocacy, and a continued commitment to public education, retired educators remain a powerful force for positive change—proving that leadership does not end with retirement but evolves into new opportunities to serve and inspire.
