Geraldine Haggard – Plano RTA – TRTA Member Since 1999

Ms. Geraldine Haggard taught in schools for 50 years. Now retired, she volunteers her time working as an active member in her local chapter, Plano RTA. As an advocate for public school retirees, she still serves, fosters, and inspires her community in many ways. All the way from Solstice Retirement Home in Plano, Texas, she shares her story with us…

Sharing My World

When the new year comes, I will have lived at Solstice for nine years. I have had three trips to hospitals but have excellent care where I live.

I have had opportunities to share in several ways. I play the piano for our church services, and for funerals that happened here instead of a church.

I served as an editor for a genealogy project that created a collection of 22 stories from the lives of our habitants. I collected stories and wrote the interviews of five of the groups. This project has encouraged residents to talk about memories and start their own genealogy projects.

I enjoy tutoring a fifth grader who is in a new school and needs help as a reader.

My teacher retirement group has a book gifting project that I serve as a committee member, and I have helped get donated books from schools.

Until my last hospital visit, I served on the board of a grief support program for families who had deaths; I served as a co-leader for kindergarten and first graders in this program.

Life is not always easy for the friends I live with. Smiles and waves always help at times. I feel like I am part of a family. God has been good to me! Taught 50 years!
