Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) Executive Director Tim Lee hosted a livestream on January 6 with Texas Congressman Lance Gooden. If you missed the live event, you may still watch the video en este enlace!
The discussion took place from Washington, D.C. and focused on the major win for Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirees, the passage and signing of H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act!
Gooden and Lee also touched on how the process for restoring Social Security benefits for those impacted by the now repealed Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) may move forward.
We know our deserving public education retirees, as well as millions of other public servants, are anxious to receive their earned Social Security benefits as soon as possible! TRTA will be working closely with Congressman Gooden’s office to ensure the most up-to-date information is provided to our members, supporters, and friends.
In the meantime, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has created this webpage to answer a few commonly asked questions. The page will be updated as more information becomes available. Please bear in mind the SSA may need several months to process benefit changes for more than 2.5 million Americans affected by WEP and/or GPO.
As TRTA members know, President Joe Biden signed H.R. 82 into law on January 5 in a special ceremony held at the White House. Read our update about this historic event and watch Tim Lee’s live video from D.C. here!
