Primary Election Coming Soon, Texas House District 2 Runoff Scheduled for January 30

Members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) are busy preparing for the upcoming Primary Election that will be held on March 5, 2024. TRTA plans to send a series of Inside Line articles to our members to inform them about important election dates, voter registration, early voting, and more!

Members, your vote in the Primary Election is a priority! We are asking you to gather your friends, family members, and neighbors and show up at the polls and cast your votes.

Your vote in the Primary Election is important. Why? Because most elections in Texas are decided during the primary election cycle. According to the Texas Tribune, only 18% of registered voters cast a ballot in the 2022 primaries. Every election and every single vote matters, and voters have the power!

TRTA knows we must continue fighting for our dedicated retired school personnel. While we had much to celebrate in 2023 after receiving supplemental payments and a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for several hundred thousand retirees, there are still many retirees who continue to struggle to keep up with the ever-increasing daily costs of living.

When the 89th Texas Legislature begins in 2025 we must be prepared! The road to influencing future policy outcomes starts NOW. Please stay tuned to the Inside Line over the coming weeks to learn how you can get involved.

Special Runoff Election Scheduled in Texas House District 2

For members of TRTA who live in Texas House District 2, we encourage you to vote in the special runoff election scheduled for Tuesday, January 30. HD 2 includes three counties east of Dallas: Hunt, Hopkins, and Van Zandt.

As members of this district may know, the winner of this special runoff election will fill the remainder of the term of Representative Bryan Slaton, who was expelled from the Texas House of Representatives in May of 2023.

The two candidates vying for this position, Republicans Jill Dutton (a former school board member) and Brent Money (a lawyer), have also filed to run in the March Primary Election to fill the HD 2 seat for the term that begins in 2025. Your vote in the January runoff will not count towards the March Primary Election results, and you will need to return to the polls again to select the HD 2 candidate(s) who will appear on the November General Election ballot.

Early voting for this special election begins next week on Monday, January 22 and continues through Friday, January 26 at the Van Zandt County Library from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This article provides information about voting locations on January 30.
