The Texas Legislature convened yesterday, January 14, 2025, for their 89th Legislative Session. The Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) is ready to share our priorities with all legislators in the Texas Senate and House of Representatives.
What Can TRTA Members Expect This Session?
While many bills have been filed ahead of session, there is still much preparation to be done by legislators before the business of considering legislation takes place.
One of the first orders of business of the Texas House was to elect a new Speaker. Representative Dustin Burrows (R, Lubbock) was elected to this position on January 14. His role will include appointing chairs and members of the various House committees where bills will be assigned and considered. Committee member appointments may take several weeks, and the first committee hearings will begin sometime in February.
In the House, TRTA members will want to pay special attention to the Appropriations (Article III) and Pensions, Investments, and Financial Services committees. In the Senate, many bills that affect the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) will be heard by Senate Finance and Senate State Affairs.
