A Lesson in Kindness: Alvin ISD Students Bring Joy Across Generations

The culture of giving is alive and thriving in Alvin ISD, where students and staff continue to find meaningful ways to serve others and strengthen their community. One shining example comes from Meridiana Elementary, with kindness, creativity, and connection taking center stage during a recent service initiative.

As part of Alvin ISD Serves—an effort that encourages campuses to give back through acts of service—Meridiana Elementary once again selected the Alvin Area Retired School Personnel (AARSP) as their project recipient. Through this initiative, the second grade class made a special trip to the Alvin Senior Center to participate in the AARSP meeting and meal.

This project, organized by teacher Christine Ang and supported by the school’s principal, Mrs. Boyce, reflects the school’s commitment to fostering compassion and community involvement at an early age.

“We knew it was happening, but we didn’t fully realize all that was in store,” said AARSP President Brenda Teykl. “When the entire second grade class stepped off the bus, their faces lit up—and so did ours. They were so excited, so sweet. There were hugs all around. It was precious.”

During their visit, the students performed a song, recited a poem, created handmade placemats, and shared desserts with the retirees. What began as a simple visit quickly became something unforgettable.

“It all happened so fast,” Brenda shared. “They truly went above and beyond what we imagined.”

The joy didn’t end that day. “After it was all over, our members were buzzing with excitement,” she said. In return, AARSP hosted a pizza party for the students before the semester break. “When we brought the pizza to their classroom, several students said, ‘I remember you!’ That was very special.”

Reflecting on the experience, Brenda added, “We expected a visit, but we didn’t know the impact it would have on both groups.”

Moments like these are a powerful reminder that service is more than a single event—it’s a connection that bridges generations and leaves a lasting impression on everyone involved.
