As members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) may have read in our Línea interior on November 12, H.R. 82 passed through the U.S. House of Representatives with a vote of 327 in favor and 75 against.
H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 by Rep. Garret Graves (R, LA) and Abigail Spanberger (D, VA), proposes to repeal the unfair Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).
While this vote was historic by being the first one taken on these arbitrary provisions since their inception forty years ago, the work to help retirees impacted by WEP and GPO is not done!

The ball is now in the U.S. Senate’s court to advance the bill, and we need our members’ help to reach out to them and ask for their support of WEP and GPO repeal!
The WEP and GPO have unfairly damaged retirees’ lives and pocketbooks for too long, and by banding together, we will continue to put pressure on lawmakers to finally pass a solution!
